From Maths to Creative Subjects – A Comprehensive Presentation of E-Learning Achievements
YWIES Shanghai Lingang aims to provide a comprehensive and balanced education for every child. We adopted a diversified teaching curriculum with a student-centred teaching method to teach students in a fun and motivating education environment. In many disciplines, Yew Wah attaches great importance to cultivating students' bilingual skills and multicultural vision, so that students can truly experience the international education model in a cross-cultural environment and lay a solid foundation for future overseas study.
Ⅰ. "Mathematical Aesthetics" in E-Learning – Maths, Science, ICT Homework Presentation
The Philosophy of Yew Wah is training talents for the world. Therefore, the core of our teaching should not only focus on skills, but also children's spirit of exploration. In the process of mathematical teaching, the teacher will consider the needs and interests of the students and create a space of independent exploration, to enhance the interest of the learning process, and at the same time, to cultivate the children’s ability of applying mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems, and then to help children develop the spirit of exploration. In addition to regular teaching courses, the school has also set up ASAs and activity weeks for students, so that students can experience the fun of mathematics and science in the process of exploration.
YWIES Shanghai Lingang’s Mathematics curriculum is taught in both Chinese and English, and a variety of western teaching methods is integrated into it. "Mathematical poster design" is a form of homework welcomed by students. Mathematical posters can not only help students to scientifically sort out the knowledge they have learnt, but also improve students' thinking ability and creativity. In Grade 7 Maths teaching, the teacher let the students use what they have learnt in geometry (the nature of the polygon, and polygon drawing) to design graphics, making mathematics learning become vivid, interesting and rigorous at the same time, and also let the students strengthened the geometry related mathematical knowledge in the process of making the posters.
Emily Lai: "My poster design inspiration came from polygon taught by teacher Jin on class. It is like a flower. I think it is a beautiful pattern, so I decided to draw a polygon in the middle of the poster. And the reason why I drew the hexagon is because if you stretch out the six outer angles you can form exactly six regions, which are used to write different knowledge points, and when you draw out the diagonals you can see that it forms a quadrilateral that we have learnt about, perfect. The knowledge points here include bisector of mathematics, interior and exterior angles, algorithm of polygon and so on. Some of the knowledge points belong to last semester, such as corresponding angles. I really enjoyed the process of designing the Maths posters and integrating the geometry knowledge into it. Geometry is really a matter of beauty. It is especially fascinating.”
Our school motto says we align with science and technology, and science curriculum plays an important role in Yew Wah curriculum system. This is a comprehensive subject that includes physics, chemistry and biology. We break through the fixed thinking mode and narrow perspective of traditional teaching through vivid and interesting teaching methods and novel and innovative teaching contents, so as to guide children to establish outstanding scientific spirit and scientific character.
In Grade 7, teacher Crystal Yin used an interesting and practical topic “Study of Family Microbial Food Production” to help students carry out scientific experiments at home, which cleverly integrate the subject knowledge in the lesson, and let the children deepen their study through discussion, co-operation, and verification.
Under the guidance of foreign teachers, Grade 7 student Jerry Li, carried out the koala bear conservation plan as homework: “Today, human beings build too many plants, have big cars, cut a lot of trees and destroy a lot of natural habitats. Such behaviours pollute the air and water. The lives of the animals become tougher and tougher, including the cute koalas. We have to take action now to help the animals, and improve the environment where they live. Otherwise, many animals will disappear and the human beings will become lonelier. Eventually the human beings will suffer from the bad behaviours they take today. We should plant more trees, use smaller cars, try our best to use the public transportation tools, and purify the waste water. I believe as long as we take the correct actions in time, till 2040, we will have more trees, the forests will recover, the air will become fresher, and the rivers will become cleaner. The relationship between the animals and the human beings will become more harmonious. We will have more koalas, that will be much happier than today. Eventually the lives of the human beings will become happier too.
“In this koala bear conservation project, I used a cardboard box to create two different setting of time periods. Next, I made a 3D model out of paper. In this model, two kinds of backgrounds show the situation in 2040. If Australia reduces the use of carbon dioxide, the koala bear population will be larger than in 2020. Through the koala project, I clearly realised the importance of protecting the natural environment and the harm of carbon dioxide pollutants to the environment and animals. If we don't protect nature and continue to pollute our world, then what will happen next will be just like wild fire killing koala bears, and human beings will become endangered.”
The Grade 8 students conducted an investigation report on the virus of SARS and COVID-19, which was a very in-depth work with reference to a large number of materials and was fully recognised by the teachers. It was of high scientific value.
Amy Ma: “During the Spring Festival, COVID-19 virus broke out on a large scale, causing a lot of fear among people. All of a sudden, almost everyone responded to the government's call to stay at home. This reminds people of the outbreak of SARS in 2003. Although I was not born at that time, I learnt a lot about SARS from my elders. In order to let you know more about novel coronavirus and the SARS virus outbreak in 2003, I will make an in-depth investigation and compare the similarities and differences between the two viruses from four aspects: biological structure, outbreak cause, government treatment and social impact.”
Yew Wah ICT lesson is more than just a course; it is more about students' skills and the cultivation of thinking habits, especially paying attention to the cultivation of the students' practical abilities and interests. In Yew Wah, there are many practical operation courses. This can not only let children practise hands-on ability, but also help them to think and explore independently in operation, and have a more intuitive understanding of what they have learnt. In this assignment for Grade 6 ICT course, the students have made unique and wonderful works by using the programming language they have learnt through independent practice.
Jerry Li: In ICT classes, I have been learning about three programming languages. The first is LOGO, the second is programming with blocks at code.org and finally there is Scratch. I especially like LOGO because instead of putting blocks together, I can actually write the code to tell a turtle to move around my screen and make lines. For one of the challenges, we drew flowers. The flowers are actually circle of lines, so I have to turn my turtle 360 degrees to finish the flower, and this is where the REPEAT command comes in. With the REPEAT command, I can make the turtle go back and forth and turn two degrees which makes a whole circle and my flower is done, with colour and pattern. I like programming because it is fun to learn and helps me understand about the technology we have today.
II. "Deduction of Social Studies" in E-Learning – Social Studies Homework Presentation
In the teaching process of social studies subject in Yew Wah, by integrating the cross-cultural teaching with the topics that students learn, we can effectively promote the teaching interactivity and interest, and cultivate students' critical thinking and problem solving skills from the perspectives of different cultures. Therefore, students not only inherit Chinese culture, but also have the opportunity to see the world from different perspectives. In this way, no matter where they go in the future, they will have a clear understanding of themselves and become talents with profound Chinese culture and international competitiveness.
- Social Studies
Social Studies curriculum in YWIES Shanghai Lingang includes Chinese Social Studies and English Social Studies, which introduces the domestic and foreign teaching contents and aims to encourage students to explore the world around them, for a better self-awareness, understanding their time and space and culture, and developing the students' logical thinking.
The English Social Studies homework topic for Grade 6 students is "Fossil Evidence Cartoons", to which Jerry Li has a lot to say: “We are studying how the earth started, and also where the life on earth began, and grew. We learnt that there are many different eras of life on earth, and that often the eras end with a big mass extinction of animals and life caused by comets, volcanoes or other terrible things. Mr Walters asked us to look at the ways we find evidence of life on earth in that past, and draw it. I found this very interesting, and would like to learn more about how to find out about ancient life in the future!”
Learning Chinese ancient history of Yew Wah Chinese Social Studies curriculum, Angela Wang from 7A also had a deep reflection: “When we started to study China's ancient history in the middle of March, we learnt "The Decline and Fall of the Eastern Han Dynasty", " Western Han and Eastern Han's Science and Technology and Culture", "Three Kingdoms Tripartite Confrontation" and so on. Our main work is historical workbook exercises. I finished all my homework seriously. We had map analysis, material analysis, comparative research topic, and short answer questions for exercises. Everyone’s very active when we were learning "Three Kingdoms Tripartite Confrontation". I made a historical poster about Cao Cao after school. I was very glad that I often get "excellent" for my homework. I will work harder!
III. "Extension" of the Art in E-Learning – Art and Music Homework Presentation
Romain Rolland said: "The great significance of art, basically is that it can show people the true feelings, the mystery of the inner life and enthusiasm of the world." Literature and art is Yew Wah’s strength, and our school motto says "align with literature and art". Different from the traditional education model, YWIES Shanghai Lingang not only emphasises the development of students in academic courses, but also hopes that students can be well trained in music, art, character and mental health. Art is the key to the progress of human history and the basis of Yew Wah's educational philosophy and goal. Therefore, we ensure that children learn a variety of music and art courses to achieve a balanced and comprehensive expansion.
Grade 7 Johnson Kim: ”In the period of this fulfilling e-learning period, we’ve learnt and done variety of brilliant job by using technology during the classes, also including our choir class.
“Intriguingly, each of us wrote an 8-bar melody after reviewing different music theory. Moreover, we copied it to a website called “note flight” which we can easily edit our work. To me, I created a melody based on a dulcet song. I added some chords and various structures that we learnt in the class. In a nutshell, we not only reviewed those theories but also learnt how to arrange songs simply.
“Personally speaking, I was considerably shocked by the rapid development of technology. From this homework, we gained a lot of music knowledge.”
From the love of art to the love of life and creation, and having a sound personality is an indispensable part of the "holistic education" that Yew Wah always committed on. In this art assignment, Grade 8 students showed us the endless charm of art with their novel and unique imagination and unrestrained creativity。
