At YWIES Lingang, the Careers and University Guidance Office has carefully planned a rich variety of career-related activities for high school students, Iincluding an exciting Career Development Day and a meaningful Job Shadow programme. These activities provide students with early exposure to the workplace and valuable experiences.

Ms Jennifer LIU, YWIES Career and University Guidance Coordinator, introduced that this year the school prepared two career-related events for high school students. The first was Career Day, where the school specially invited an external professional Human Resources Director to organize a unique career session for the students.

The second event was the Job Shadow programme, which lasted one week and was open to IGCSE 2 students. The school successfully connected with four external companies: Berkeley Group, Shanghai Film Museum, Burgess-Norton WH(Shanghai) Auto-Part Co., Ltd., and StarGale's Collection, providing free internship opportunities for the students. Meanwhile, YWIES and YCIS Lingang Campuses also offered Teacher Assistant positions internally, with two students participating. A total of 17 IGCSE Year 2 students signed up for the Job Shadow programme.

Students who participated in the corporate internships gained unique experiences and insights. Dora CHEN, who interned at Berkeley Group, shared that the four-day internship included two days of company staff explaining industry and company information and teaching relevant knowledge, followed by two days of group self-planned activities focusing on marketing strategy. She felt that the biggest difference from school was the need for self-management of time and proactive work arrangement, without teachers supervising as at school. This internship made her find marketing and market planning very interesting, possibly influencing her future study or career choices, while broadening her horizons to industries she normally would not encounter.

Ray ZHANG, who interned at Burgess-Norton WH(Shanghai) Auto-Part Co., Ltd., said that by playing relevant roles, he experienced the company’s onboarding process and some company activities. After communicating with workshop staff, he learned about the production process and specific work content in the workshop, gaining a deeper understanding of future career choices and inspiration for future job selection.

Shirley PANG, an intern at StarGale's Collection Hotel, learned about the hotel’s brand culture and experienced processes such as check-out, pastry making, room cleaning, client visits, and marketing promotion as an intern. Her biggest takeaway was understanding the details that customers do not notice, such as front desk staff selecting rooms based on customer needs.

Jennifer JIN, who interned at YCIS Lingang Campus, worked in the office for the first two days and assisted with student supervision for the last three days. She discovered that the internship rarely involved applying textbook theories but required more communication skills, as she had to interact with different parents and students to meet their diverse needs. This taught her how to deal with different people and strive to satisfy everyone, such as resolving disputes among children.

Chloe CHEN, an intern at Shanghai Film Museum, learned about the history of Shanghai Film Studio and achievements of some outstanding directors, and also engaged in photography work, gaining considerable photographic experience. She felt the internship was very different from school, gaining real workplace experience and interpersonal skills by working in the management department with the teachers.

Roey ZHOU, who also interned at the Shanghai Film Museum alongside Chloe CHEN, worked on photography and helped create promotional posters for the museum, noting that this was very different from regular classes. She aspires to become a director in the future, and this internship helped her understand that filmmaking involves much more work behind the scenes and requires hard effort.

Corporate representatives also highly praised the YWIES interns. Mr Jerry ZHANG, Regional General Manager of StarGale's Collection, expressed that he felt the vigor, broad knowledge, and thirst for knowledge of the new generation among the students, hoping these learning experiences will help and inspire them in their future studies and career choices.

Ms Echo YU, Partnership Marketing Manager, and Mr Terence LI, Senior Business Development Manager of Berkeley Group, said that during the one-week experiential course, the students demonstrated creative ideas along with pragmatic market analysis strategies. They thanked the students for their support and participation and wished them success in their academic journeys, encouraging them to bravely pursue their dreams and return with fruitful results.

Mr Henry CHEN, General Manager of Burgess-Norton WH (Shanghai) Auto-Part Co., Ltd., stated that the students participated in the specific work of the Safety Production Department, Logistics Department, Quality Control Department, and Engineering Department, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the operations and workflows of each department. The staff unanimously praised the YWIES students for their proactive attitude and outstanding performance, and look forward to more students joining the company to accumulate valuable practical experience through internships.
