      YWIES Shanghai Lingang Parent Workshop


      The path of development for every child seems to be long, but in fact it is a fleeting and irreversible process. Therefore, Yew Wah believes that comprehensive development and healthy growth is essential for children’s future. For this reason, this semester, Yew Wah has arranged a few parent workshops to share information on university guidance, parent-child relationships, and academic achievements. Speakers include teachers in our school, experts in various fields outside the school, and parents of students. We hope to continue to co-operate with parents to help every Yew Wah student develop strongly.


      Why Do We Want to Have a Parent Workshop?


      Principal's message:
      We hope that through more parent-school activities, exchanges, learning and sharing, parents can better understand Yew Wah's educational philosophy, and experience the school's "bilingual and bicultural" teaching atmosphere, as well as the teaching mode of "learning community". We welcome more parents to the school. By participating in various workshops and activities, parents can experience how Yew Wah's children grow up in a harmonious and friendly environment in person. At the same time, parents can have a clearer understanding on "How can Yew Wah help your children achieve all-round development?” More importantly, we hope that through closer parent-school communication, parents will better understand their role in their child’s development.

      Academic Sharing
      How to Positively Affect the Learning of Your Child


      In December, our school held a workshop for all parents of Secondary school students. The theme was “How to Positively Affect the Learning of Your Child”. The workshop was chaired by the academic co-ordinator of the Secondary school, and the heads of English, Mathematics and Chinese departments shared their experience and ideas.


      At the beginning of the workshop, Maggie Zhou, the Chinese Academic Co-ordinator, and Adrian Scarlett, the Western Academic Co-ordinator introduced the workshop to parents. They cited Professor John Hattie’s research findings in the field of education and shared the topic "How to Maintain and Stimulate a Child's Reading Enthusiasm", suggesting that parents can improve their impact on students through incentives and fault tolerance. They taught parents to avoid mistakes when supporting their children, explored with parents what factors are effective in improving their child's performance, and emphasised again at the end of the workshop that parents’ participation in their child's learning has great significance towards academic performance.


      Afterwards, Sarah Nathanson and Phil Briggs from the Secondary English Department put forwards their professional analysis and suggestions on IGCSE's English learning methods, teaching system and examination system, as well as the examination skills and matters that concerned parents. The insightful explanations would enable the parents to have a deeper understanding of the teaching situation of these courses.


      Vivian Zhang, head of the Chinese Department, and Belinda Zhou shared their experience on how to make children read happily. These two teachers believed that the home is the place for children to find themselves in the process of growing up. When reading takes place at home, it can be more beneficial to a child’s development. Parents had better observe, understand, accept and appreciate children's reading preferences, so that children can read happily.


      Finally, through a video of student presentations on problem-solving skills, Louis Liu, the head of the Mathematics Team, presented on the importance of motivation and fault tolerance for the growth and progress of each child, and how the school helps students understand and use mathematical knowledge in the teaching process. At the same time, Mr Liu suggested that parents should pay more attention to the growth of their children, apart from their academic achievements. The academic achievements are only temporary, but the overall development is life-long.


      In his speech, he analysed many practical learning skills and methods, so that parents can better understand how to give the right help and support on the path of their child's learning!


      Parent-Child Relationship
      How to Maintain a Good Relationship with Your Child


      The relationship with one’s growing child is a challenge that every parent needs to face. Children at different stages have a different world that they want to explore, and what they need the most is just a safe and stable harbour. So how should parents maintain a good relationship with their children?


      In mid-January, Yuan Shengfang, a well-known psychologist and senior teacher of Educational Psychology who has studied mental health education for 30 years, was invited to give a speech on parent-child relationships titled "Being a Wonderful Parent – Skills of Effective Communication with Children" to parents.


      In the speech, Ms Yuan introduced the ways and skills of parent-child communication through stories, and guided parents to understand children's psychological needs. She led parents to conduct interactive psychological games and case study, so that parents could have a deeper understanding of how to understand, accept and empathise with their children. She also emphasised the importance of encouragement for children's growth.


      At the same time, Ms Yuan explained to parents that different children have different personalities. Parents need to carefully judge the condition of their child, and choose the scientific and effective communication methods for different types of children. Especially when conflicts with their children occur, parents need to deal with them calmly and rationally, so as to avoid irreparable results.


      At the end of the lecture, parents had an opportunity to ask questions about parent-child relationships, and Ms Yuan gave great advice.


      University Guidance
      How to Prepare for Studying Abroad


      University guidance is an important part of Yew Wah's educational work. In October, we invited Guo Feng, a psychologist returning from abroad and a Doctor of Psychological Counselling, to talk about the psychology of overseas students. Parents realised that academic preparation is very important for their children going to study abroad, but more importantly they need to make full preparation in terms of psychology and personal abilities, such as peer pressure resistance ability, adaptability, self-management ability, independent living ability, good living habits, cross-cultural communication ability, social communication ability, and the ability to solve problems alone. These abilities are essential for living and studying abroad.


      Through sharing of many real cases, Dr Guo let parents see that "the success or failure of overseas students depends on their education before they go". At the same time, it reminded parents how to better accompany their children at preparing for studying abroad. The more comprehensive preparation needs the joint efforts of the school, parents and children themselves. To achieve this goal, we need to integrate the holistic education advocated by Yew Wah and family education.


      Conclusion:


      Education needs a long-term vision. The ultimate goal of the school’s education is not only to cultivate a healthy child, but also to cultivate their talents for the future world. Yew Wah will continue to carry out more parent workshops to help parents work more closely with their children to achieve great things.
